Statement of Principles

Nevada government keeps getting bigger and BIGGER. We deserve minimum, strictly limited, constitutional government in this State.

Forget all this blather about a $3B "shortfall". The budget for the '12/'13 biennium should be no more than $200M.

UNLV Football Integrity: Roughing the Taxpayers

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

$280K Livengood said we have a responsibility to the integrity of the program and perception of our program.

What "integrity" is that? How do we know it was a *personal* trip? Because $400K Coach Hauck says so? No way!

The Regents -- the bozos accountable to the taxpayers for the way NSHE funds are spent -- should conduct an independent, *public* investigation.
  • Was Gregorak's trip/expenses charged to a UNLV AD credit card?
  • Does UNLV football have any Colorado high school prospects on its recruitment list?
  • Has Gregorak visited strip clubs on his previous, "official" recruiting trips, either for UNLV or Montana?
The Boulder DA could answer many of these questions. Let's hope he comes through. Don't count on it, though. He can't even figure out who killed JeanBenét.

Nevada Taxpayers Making Hauck Rich

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

The trip was organized by Koeberle & Associates, a Pittsburgh-based sports and entertainment marketing agency.

Division 1 makes money for a lot of people. Hauck is making ~$450K. TV broadcast networks sell millions in advertising. Then there are all the sports marketing related firms (like Koeberle) which collect nice fees from negotiating sports/endorsement contracts, merchandising, etc. The football players (officially) work for free. They're not called "dumb jocks" for nothing.

Why do Nevada residents continue to support this abuse?

NSHE Is Certainly Not A Benevolent Institution

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

Lots of confusion out there.

Pro sports leagues are private, for-profit businesses. Profits accrue to the Owners. Players work for the highest bidder. Nothing wrong with that.

True charities are non-profit benevolent organizations. Money leftover after (very low) expenses ("net income") gets distributed to the nominal beneficiaries. I am aware of exactly ONE charity like that.

Most charities are non-profit businesses. There is relatively *little* (~5%) net income because expenses are very high. The money goes to pay for executive salaries, wine-&-cheese parties, and condos in Ft Lauderdale. Even then, distributions are not very discriminating. NSHE comes to mind. Where's its executive retreat?

I hope to influence people, especially those inclined toward small government who've never really thought about NSHE before. It's working.

Hey Klaich, Smatresk, Kruger, Hauck, Livengood, Sandgren et al. We're on to you!

UNLV Football Players Run to Practice

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

Hauck is more interested in having them run onto the field ..

None of the football players run to class. They run *out*. That is, if they bother to show up.

Brooks and Taumua are both majoring in Criminal Justice. Clausen majoring in Interdiscplinary (AKA "Jockology"). Not serious.

N$HE Roll Call

  • White (Boyd) $339K
  • NSHE Chancellor Klaich makes $330K.
  • UNLV President Smatresk makes $300K.
  • UNLV Athletic Director Livengood makes $285K.
  • NSC President Maryanski makes $250K.
  • Harter (BMI) 248K
  • West (Dental School) $218K
  • VP Smith $192K.
  • Provost Bowers $189K
  • Division 1 assistant coaches make $125K.
  • Unionized professors overpaid.
  • and on and on and on.
Higher education was set up in this state as sort of a public benevolent society to train the next generation of applied scientists in fields relevant to this state. Now it's more like a professional sports training camp whose beneficiaries are dunderhead coaches, jocks (on scholarship), administrators, and staffers who vote for Democrats.

No more Division 1 sports.
No more athletic scholarships.
No more NFL/NBA/MLB payscale coaches.
No more junk departments (like Interdisciplinary) maintained to provide jocks with academic cover.
No more staffers paid more than the Governor.
No more liberal arts programs at less than full fee ($800/credit).
No more buildings and roads named after Raggio.
No more NSHE lobbyists.

Townhall With Smatresk

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

Nobody asks Smatresk the obvious questions.
  1. Why do you deserve to be paid $300K/yr? Are you worth >twice what we pay Gibbons?
  2. Why do you pay your head football coach $450K/yr and his assisants $125K? Is UNLV a NFL farm team?
  3. Why do you pay your head basketball coach $1M/yr and *his* assistants $130K? Is UNLV a NBA farm team?
  4. Isn't true that the decision to phase out "University Studies" was made a few YEARS ago, after critics and media noted that only JOCKS majored in it, that it had no objective standards, and yet few completed it?
  5. Isn't it true you simply RENAMED "University Studies" as "Interdisciplinary Studies"?
  6. Why do you preserve *that* JUNK department? Isn't it true that Interdisciplinary only serves to provide academic cover to jocks?
  7. What percentage of your football and basketball players ever graduate? Isn't it significantly < non-athletes?
  8. How much do your sports marketing partners -- t-shirts, posters, TV, etc -- make off your teams?
  9. Why do you fund a law school? Are there too few laws and lawyers in this state?
  10. How many UNLV buildings named after state politicians?
  11. How many of your employees are related by family or marriage to current or ex state legislators?
  12. How much money does UNLV spend on lobbyists?
Tick tick. I'm pretty good with numbers so don't try to baffle me with statistics.

Abolish UNLV Football!

Most UNLV football playes NEVER graduate. Those who do major in ridiculous programs like Basketweaving. To recruit these "student"-athletes UNLV offers them scholarships. Sports boosters offer them cash, cars, and VP jobs after graduation. Maybe you even work for one of them.

Most competitive football players are steroid freaks. Many football players suffer from painful, crippling injuries. Many end up addicted to painkillers. MRI shows that football collisions cause permanent brain injury.

As if this isn't bad enough, we pay higher taxes to support it.

No more UNLV football. Future NFL Hall of Famers have plenty of football schools OUTSIDE of Nevada to choose from. Fanatical football fans have plenty of Cable TV choices to watch.

Regents Cry Cataclysm But Hire Big League Coaches.

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

NSHE uberbureaucregent Leavitt said This [cut] would be cataclysmic to the Nevada System of Higher Education

This demagogue Leavitt is too much to take. UNLV Athletic Director Livengood was just hired for $300K+. He in turn just hired a new head football coach (Hauck) for ~$450K. Hauck then recruited assistants for ~$130K -- more than most professors (who are overpaid to begin with). Basketball head coach Kruger makes $1M/yr (his assistants also handsomely paid).

The Regents sign-off on ALL of this, plus the compromised (non-existent, really) academic standards required to admit jocks and the numerous junk departments required to provide them with academic cover.

Now what's all this talk about a cataclysm?

Coach Bobby "Sinecure" Hauck

Send Hauck back to Montana. We don't want him here unless he is willing to work for $100 per game. The public sector is *not* supposed to be a place to get rich.

UNLV is taxpayer supported benevolent institution. The "charity" is supposed to benefit students, not WELFARE QUEENS like Hauck, Smatresk, Livengood, etc.

Division I sports corrupts the entire mission of higher education.

Hauck Interviews for UNLV Football Coach

The public sector is not supposed to be a place to get RICH. If Hauck is so talented let him see employment in the NFL or one of those non-NSHE football schools.

UNFLV

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum.

The new [UNLV football] coach probably will earn about $700,000

His assistants >$100K. Basketball coach makes ~$1M; his assistants >$100K. The new AD will make ~$250K. By comparison, Physics Professors Selser makes $150K. Chen ~$115K. Zane, Kwong, Lepp & Shelton make ~$100K.

The science faculty is also overpaid, but at least they have a real academic mission. The sports professors make all that money for teaching kids how to catch and throw balls.

What exactly is UNLV's mission -- to teach science or scoring?

If our football professors are so good they should be working in the NFL or for football schools like USC. If our science professors are so good they should be consulting in Silicon Valley or RTP for $20,000 per week.

It's really outrageous that we pay UNLV instructors so much. UNLV is a public *benevolent* institution. It is NOT supposed to be a place for insiders to get rich. Teaching is sort of a PhD's sacred obligation. We should only really have to cocmpensate them with titles and token honoraria. Yes, we might only be able to recruit retirees from other institutions and/or low quality professors, but so be it. Maybe we can sweeten the deal by paying them $100 a game to coach football.
