Former Gov. and U.S. Sen. Richard Bryan has agreed to chair a team of six lobbyists who will work for free in representing the Nevada System of Higher Education at the 2011 Legislature.
The government should NOT be able to hire lobbyists to lobby for ... MORE government! Either paid (a complete travesty) or *unpaid*.
If that shyster Bryan -- whose law firm makes a LOT of money on government contracts and its "services" as insiders/fixers -- wants to advocate as a private citizen for MORE government there's nothing to stop him. But this whole coordinated effort between his "team" and NSHE is the Government-Union Complex in action.
By the way, Klaich makes ~$325K/yr, so you can see why he wants the gravy train to keep rolling.

NSHE Is Certainly Not A Benevolent Institution

Lots of confusion out there.
Pro sports leagues are private, for-profit businesses. Profits accrue to the Owners. Players work for the highest bidder. Nothing wrong with that.
True charities are non-profit benevolent organizations. Money leftover after (very low) expenses ("net income") gets distributed to the nominal beneficiaries. I am aware of exactly ONE charity like that.
Most charities are non-profit businesses. There is relatively *little* (~5%) net income because expenses are very high. The money goes to pay for executive salaries, wine-&-cheese parties, and condos in Ft Lauderdale. Even then, distributions are not very discriminating. NSHE comes to mind. Where's its executive retreat?
I hope to influence people, especially those inclined toward small government who've never really thought about NSHE before. It's working.

CCSD & NSHE. Two Sides of the Same Pork.

Klaich doesn't care how poorly CCSD does its job so long as it keeps awarding HS diplomas. Graduates are potential NHSE warm bodies. Klaich needs them to justify his $330K/yr salary. In fact, the less prepared the better. Kids who require *remedial* instruction represent a potentially longer subscription.
Nevada taxpayes want to know. How many times do we have to pay to teach kids the 3R's?

- Why do you continue to fund JUNK departments like "University Studies" which only serve to provide academic cover to jocks?
- What percentage of your football and basketball players ever graduate? [it's significantly < non-athletes]
- How much do your sports marketing partners -- t-shirts, posters, TV, etc -- make off your teams?
- Why do you fund a law school? Are there too few laws and lawyers in this state?
- Why are so many NSHE buildings named after Senator Raggio?
- Why do you pay clinical professors $400K? Do they use our resources to support their private medical practices?
- Your course catalogs describe NSHE's mission in very grandiose, pompous terms. Do you even *know* what NSHE's mission is supposed to be?
- How many of your employees are related by family or marriage to state legisators?
- How much money does NSHE spend on lobbyists?

This demagogue Klaich is too much. The Univ of NV was established as sort of a public charity. Mining, Engineering, and Agriculture students were meant to be the "beneficiaries"; FREE (or nominal) TUITION. Yep.
Well *that* modest mission could not stand! The applied science students now have to pay full fee. Can't discriminate against liberal arts students (who had NO place in the original university). Welcome to the "new" UNV charity:
Make the UNV a small A&M (+mining) school once again. Those students pay NOTHING. No more Division 1 sports. Teams can be recruited from the >2m tall applied science majors. Coaches from their faculty; assistants their grad students. No more athletic scholarships. No more liberal arts, or at least make THEM pay full (user) fee. $800/credit sounds right. No more research-driven (politically funded) faculty. Research is an uncertain activity best left to the private sector. No more expensive career professors. If need be recruit emeritus professors who have retired here to work for token honoria. Teaching the next generation is sort of a sacred duty which Phd's took upon themselves the moment they accepted their Black Belts.

The rest are completely POLITICAL expenditures, designed to pump money into Districts other than Raggio's (UNR).
First on the list for elimination should be Division 1 sports. You can always field teams from the ranks of the applied science majors. Put the student back in "student"-athlete. Dump the $1M/yr basketball coach, and the newly acquired $450K/yr football coach and $300K AD.

Klaich is overrated. No way he deserves the job. The Regents are just political hacks. Except for maybe one, they *all* deserve to be recalled. Klaich used to be one of those incompetent Regents. Now he has been promoted to Chancellor. Typical public sector rewarding of failure.

The University of Nevada was originally endowed with capital sufficient to fund those departments in perpetuity (without FURTHER taxpayer involvement). The policy of charging science students the same (or even more than) liberal arts students is just an egalitarian scam concocted by politically correct academics.
