Statement of Principles

Nevada government keeps getting bigger and BIGGER. We deserve minimum, strictly limited, constitutional government in this State.

Forget all this blather about a $3B "shortfall". The budget for the '12/'13 biennium should be no more than $200M.

It's just ridiculous.

Coach Kruger makes $1M/yr.

Why are Nevada taxpayers forced to fund this scam?

  • White (Boyd) $339K
  • NSHE Chancellor Klaich makes $330K.
  • UNLV President Smatresk makes $300K.
  • UNLV Athletic Director Livengood makes $285K.
  • NSC President Maryanski makes $250K.
  • Harter (BMI) 248K
  • West (Dental School) $218K
  • VP Smith $192K.
  • Provost Bowers $189K
  • Division 1 assistant coaches make $125K.
  • Unionized professors overpaid.
  • and on and on and on.
Higher education was set up in this state as sort of a public benevolent society to train the next generation of applied scientists in fields relevant to this state. Now it's more like a professional sports training camp whose beneficiaries are dunderhead coaches, jocks (on scholarship), administrators, and staffers who vote for Democrats.

No more Division 1 sports.
No more athletic scholarships.
No more NFL/NBA/MLB payscale coaches.
No more junk departments (like Interdisciplinary) maintained to provide jocks with academic cover.
No more staffers paid more than the Governor.
No more liberal arts programs at less than full fee ($800/credit).
No more buildings and roads named after Raggio.
No more NSHE lobbyists.

Townhall With Smatresk

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

Nobody asks Smatresk the obvious questions.
  1. Why do you deserve to be paid $300K/yr? Are you worth >twice what we pay Gibbons?
  2. Why do you pay your head football coach $450K/yr and his assisants $125K? Is UNLV a NFL farm team?
  3. Why do you pay your head basketball coach $1M/yr and *his* assistants $130K? Is UNLV a NBA farm team?
  4. Isn't true that the decision to phase out "University Studies" was made a few YEARS ago, after critics and media noted that only JOCKS majored in it, that it had no objective standards, and yet few completed it?
  5. Isn't it true you simply RENAMED "University Studies" as "Interdisciplinary Studies"?
  6. Why do you preserve *that* JUNK department? Isn't it true that Interdisciplinary only serves to provide academic cover to jocks?
  7. What percentage of your football and basketball players ever graduate? Isn't it significantly < non-athletes?
  8. How much do your sports marketing partners -- t-shirts, posters, TV, etc -- make off your teams?
  9. Why do you fund a law school? Are there too few laws and lawyers in this state?
  10. How many UNLV buildings named after state politicians?
  11. How many of your employees are related by family or marriage to current or ex state legislators?
  12. How much money does UNLV spend on lobbyists?
Tick tick. I'm pretty good with numbers so don't try to baffle me with statistics.

Nevada System of Higher Waste

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

This demagogue Klaich is too much. The Univ of NV was established as sort of a public charity. Mining, Engineering, and Agriculture students were meant to be the "beneficiaries"; FREE (or nominal) TUITION. Yep.

Well *that* modest mission could not stand! The applied science students now have to pay full fee. Can't discriminate against liberal arts students (who had NO place in the original university). Welcome to the "new" UNV charity:

  • Klaich ($335K)
  • UNR Pres Glick ($435K)
  • UNLV Pres Smatresk ($300K); other top officials slightly less
  • new UNLV Head Football Coach Hauck ($450K); his assistants $125K
  • new Athletic Director Livengood ($300K)
  • Head Basketball Coach Kruger ($1M); his assistants $125K
  • Clinical professors ($400K)
  • unionized Basketweaving professors -- some of whom are related to Legislators ($80K)
  • JOCKS get free rides.
The public sector is NOT supposed to be a place to get rich. Taxpayers might have other priorities for their money -- like making THEMSELVES rich. NSHE receives federal funding. Where's Obama's Pay Czar when you need him?

Make the UNV a small A&M (+mining) school once again. Those students pay NOTHING. No more Division 1 sports. Teams can be recruited from the >2m tall applied science majors. Coaches from their faculty; assistants their grad students. No more athletic scholarships. No more liberal arts, or at least make THEM pay full (user) fee. $800/credit sounds right. No more research-driven (politically funded) faculty. Research is an uncertain activity best left to the private sector. No more expensive career professors. If need be recruit emeritus professors who have retired here to work for token honoria. Teaching the next generation is sort of a sacred duty which Phd's took upon themselves the moment they accepted their Black Belts.

No more GM pay scale university administrators.

Jockology

Hey Kruger! All the Nevada tax consumers (like you) are battling over the skrinking budget pie. Once residents figure out the scam you're pulling the Governor -- who needs to worry about his *own* job -- is not going to let you board the charter flight back from the Away game.

We should make Gibbons basketball coach. He's cheaper.

Regents Cry Cataclysm But Hire Big League Coaches.

This demagogue Leavitt is too much to take. UNLV Athletic Director Livengood was just hired for $300K+. He in turn just hired a new head football coach (Hauck) for ~$450K. Hauck then recruited assistants for ~$130K -- more than most professors (who are overpaid to begin with). Basketball head coach Kruger makes $1M/yr (his assistants also handsomely paid).

The Regents sign-off on ALL of this, plus the compromised (non-existent, really) academic standards required to admit jocks and the numerous junk departments required to provide them with academic cover.

Now what's all this talk about a cataclysm?

$1M/yr Kruger Gets Knee Surgery

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

Get well soon, then resign!

I have no problem with pro athletes/coaches making millions. I don't care how much Bishop Gorman's coaching staff or players make. I *do* care when Nevada taxpayers (one of whom I happen to be) are FORCED to pay for it. I've already bought *your* tickets.

The public sector is not supposed to be a place to get rich. That's what the *private* sector is for. I'm spreading FACTS. You folks who always want to tax *other* people to pay for your favorite programs are the true hateful ones.

BTW, did any of you hoop fanatics catch that story out of SUNY-Binghamptom about how the school fired an English prof for not giving their thug basketball players special treatment? She also complained that the coaches were text messaging the "student"-athletes during class.

Pay Score: Kruger $1M. Players Nothing

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

Kruger makes $1M per year. How much do the players make? Only the government can get away with paying six figure athletes LESS than minimum wage.

Hey starters: tell the Coach you want a share of the money. He gets paid a premium for hiring you to WORK for nothing. Like any good (bad) CEO.

Smatresk & His Band of Thieves

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

Smatresk and his band of derelict administrators are the ones who have to go. They craft lowered admission standards and ridiculous departments, for the benefit of jocks. They hire the Athletic Director, the fool who, in turn, hires over-rated clowns like Sanford and Kruger. Whenever I hear crooked politicians decry "excessive" executive compensation, the poster boy I think of is Smatresk.

Come to UNLV for the Hoops

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

Kids transfer for all sorts of reasons, but a lack of playing time remains the leading cause.

The one thing they definitely DO NOT transfer for is better academic opportunities. UNLV's basketball program is completely out of control. Nevada taxpayers should not be subsidizing the NBA. If these kids want to play basketball, there are plenty of leagues to choose from. They don't have to waste their time (and Nevada tax dollars) in ridiculous programs like "Interdisciplinary" (jockology).

No More NFL/NBA -caliber Coaches At UNLV

Originally posted in a LVRJ Forum

AD Hamrick said: We've still got to run a Division I athletic program, and people still expect us to win and be successful

Hamrick makes $255K+. Did you know that? UNLV sports programs are not about building well-rounded student-athletes, but rather enriching mediocrities who cannot compete in the private sector (professional) sports world. For instance, basketball coach Lon "Freddy" Kruger($1M per year) and football coach "All About" Mike Sanford ($431K). Their assistants are also very well paid, I might add. If these guy are so good let them work in the NBA, NFL, or over at USC.

Why should serious students pay higher fees to train chowderheads how to catch passes? Non-jock undergraduates should not have to pay higher fees to support football! They already pay to support jock facilities and basketweaving courses. And if that's no bad enough, the football players receive scholarships. Put financially struggling science students on the football team and give *them* scholarships. By the way, if the jock graduation rate has improved, it's only because it used to rank among the WORST in the nation. Regardless, the majority of jocks still declare USELESS degree programs like "Interdisciplinary" (jockology). The core requirements are so weak they wouldn't challenge a third grader. Even so, most jocks still can't get through it.

The article is a little confusing. I think it means to say that UNLV's *sports* budget is $26M per year. Whatever the "official" figure is, it's misleading. Public sector accounting is alwayws fuzzy and not credible. For example, the Athletics budget does not include the pure waste jockology departments, or the compromised admissions/academic standards necessary to "recruit" a team. Finally, UNLV is all about Division 1 sports. The true cost of UNLV athletics is the cost of the entire University!
