If Livengood's jocks are able to maintain B GPA's it's only because they're majoring in faux programs like Interdisciplinary where you can "earn" a C just by showing up for team practice. Presumably a winning score merits an automatic 'A' and a get-out-of-jail free card.
BTW, for management practices like this Livengood takes home ~$300K. That's livin' good at OUR expense.

UNLV Football Integrity: Roughing the Taxpayers

For college sports you can't really talk about black/red in a way that makes business sense. How can you claim to make a "profit" when your *star* employees are officially unpaid? Or is involuntary servitude legal in Arizona?
How can you claim to make a profit when you don't even make a good-faith attempt to account for your expenses? For example, the cost of tossing admission/grading standards. Athletic Dept accountants never factor in the cost of the numerous basketweaving departments which need to be maintained to give jocks academic cover, like Sociology, Physical Education, Sports Management, etc. Those real costs are conveniently shifted to social "science" college budgets. The old shell game.
FYI, that "$28M subsidy" figure is over the biennium.
Sorry, but UNLV will not renounce federal funding. Title IX *stays*.

Eliminate UNLV Sports

I've actually met a couple of jokers like that. They were full-time fundraisers for some of those BIG charities you probably heard of. Each was making ~$400K! That's right.
UNLV is like all the other big charities out there. Probably ~96% of its charitable support goes to pay for executive salaries, wine-&-cheese parties, and Lake Tahoe chalets. Virtually NONE of the money goes to *real* students who truly need assistance. The "charity" is reserved for athletic scholarships for jocks who couldn't care less about education.
Sorry. UNLV accepts federal funds. It can't escape Title IX. The cost of Men's football is WOMEN'S football.

NSHE Is Certainly Not A Benevolent Institution

Lots of confusion out there.
Pro sports leagues are private, for-profit businesses. Profits accrue to the Owners. Players work for the highest bidder. Nothing wrong with that.
True charities are non-profit benevolent organizations. Money leftover after (very low) expenses ("net income") gets distributed to the nominal beneficiaries. I am aware of exactly ONE charity like that.

Where's its executive retreat?

Nevada System of Higher Waste

This demagogue Klaich is too much. The Univ of NV was established as sort of a public charity. Mining, Engineering, and Agriculture students were meant to be the "beneficiaries"; FREE (or nominal) TUITION. Yep.
Well *that* modest mission could not stand! The applied science students now have to pay full fee. Can't discriminate against liberal arts students (who had NO place in the original university). Welcome to the "new" UNV charity:
Make the UNV a small A&M (+mining) school once again. Those students pay NOTHING. No more Division 1 sports. Teams can be recruited from the >2m tall applied science majors. Coaches from their faculty; assistants their grad students. No more athletic scholarships. No more liberal arts, or at least make THEM pay full (user) fee. $800/credit sounds right. No more research-driven (politically funded) faculty. Research is an uncertain activity best left to the private sector. No more expensive career professors. If need be recruit emeritus professors who have retired here to work for token honoria. Teaching the next generation is sort of a sacred duty which Phd's took upon themselves the moment they accepted their Black Belts.
No more GM pay scale university administrators.

Fuzzy accounting, disseminated by flaks. In a sport (business) where players (employees) are officially unpaid (right), you can't talk about black/red in a way that makes business sense. Further, sports marketers (some of who make *very* nice livings off these programs) willfully overlook the REAL costs of D1, which at schools like UNLV is closer to the ENTIRE cost of the university.
That's right.
Without Nevada football and basketball to feed the sports fanatics (who are too cheap to subscribe to cable pro sports packages), political support for UNLV funding would fall sharply. Instead, we're forced to give free rides to chowderhead jocks, maintain junk departments for their academic covers, and provide financial windfalls to their coaches.
Hey Livengood. I hear the Raiders are looking for a GM. If you're so talented why don't you give Davis a call!
